Administrative

Farrokh Najmabadi informed the group that Al Opdenaker is the new DOE program manager for ARIES. Al said that he was glad to be onboard and is looking forward to seeing the team in April in Madison and renewing old working relationships. Farrokh congratulated Les Waganer on being honored as a Boeing Technical Fellow. Laila El-Guebaly explained the arrangements for the next ARIES meeting to be held in Madison, WI on April 22-23. She said people should make reservations for the hotels as blocks of rooms at preferred rates are being held until March 20. She is arranging for a tour on the afternoon of Monday, April 22. Please send all electronic presentations to Dennis Bruggink (bruggink@engr.wisc.edu) by April 18 to assure common access to presentation files.

Farrokh reiterated that the project would be starting on the assessment of the Thick Liquid Wall Chamber concept at the meeting. Therefore it is imperative that we should conclude all the technical analysis of the Thin Liquid Film Protected Wall concept at this upcoming meeting. To kick off the Thick Liquid Wall assessment, Wayne Meier offered to present a summary of the concept and the latest results and technical direction.

RenČ Raffray mentioned there were a sizable amount of action items from the last meeting. He suggested a separate conference call to status them and make sure all were concluded and will be reported at the upcoming meeting. These can be found on the ARIES Web site.

ARIES-IFE Study

Systems Assessment

Ron Miller has been working on the power balance calculations that generically apply to all the IFE chamber concepts. He is also applying the uncertainty analysis to the power balance.

Wayne Meier continues to work on his HI driver model but there are no results to note at this time.

Safety and Environmental Impact

Susana Reyes noted that Wayne Meier reported her progress in her absence at the last conference call. She continues to assess the mass of material to be disposed of and to assess the Waste Disposal Rating of this material. She is concentrating on the thick wall approach of the HYLIFE design. Included in her analysis is the amount of coolant material being cycled in and out of the power chamber.

Drivers

Simon Yu explained that his team is assessing the entire beamline, but is concentrating on the final focus. Their work is mainly associated with the HYLIFE thick wall approach, but he is making sure that the analysis is applicable to all chamber concepts. The main areas of concentration include protection of the magnet inner walls, mechanism for neutralization of the plasma inside the beamlines, reducing the debris migrating from the chamber into the beamlines, and beam propagation through the beamlines.

Chamber Wall Engineering

Said Abdel-Khalik reported the GT team is numerically analyzing fluid flow through porous structures to form a thin liquid film on the chamber surface. The analysis will use 3-D fluid mechanics to model the flow conditions to determine the onset of the first drop being released or ejected from the surface. The model simulates surfaces that are vertical and inclined, inverted surfaces to which the film is attached. A range of film thicknesses from 0.1 mm to 1 mm is being investigated. Several types of initiating disturbances are assumed. Said reported the time is typically on the order of 0.2 to 0.3 sec for ejection of the first droplet. Experiments are also being conducted to verify the analytical results.

Said also mentioned another experiment to examine the injected, tangential flow of a protecting film. Thicknesses being evaluated include 1 mm, 1.5 mm, and 2 mm with different inclination angles. The nominal flow speed is 7 m/s. Testing has just begun and no data has been reported to date. The intent is to also investigate flow conditions around flow disturbances, such as beam ports.

Laila El-Guebaly is wrapping up the activation analysis for the thin liquid wall concept. A few more runs have to be made and the final results will be presented at the meeting. Les Waganer has provided nominal residence times for the liquid wall and breeder materials outside the chamber based on the Prometheus design.

Don Haynes has been working with Phil Sharpe to determine the impulse loading on the wall and to see if there is a vapor pressure dependence. To date, the results show that the vapor pressure does not influence the impulse very much. The chamber radius being evaluated range from 4‡ to 6‡ m. The heat flux at the wall is 1.0 MW/m2.

Simon Yu reported that MRC (Dale Welch) is continuing to work on ballistic neutralize transport of the beams through the plasma. They are analyzing the gas properties on beam propagation.

Craig Olson mentioned the assisted-pinch is continuing to be analyzed in the same context.

Ron Miller asked about the ability of the beams to penetrate the proposed plasma windows used to separate the relative higher density gases in the chamber to the much lower density gases in the beamlines.
