In selecting Dr.Katoh, the Board recognizes not only his many outstanding scientific contributions but also his leadership role in the development of new, attractive silicon carbide composites for potential use in fusion power plants of the future.
Dr. Katoh received his Ph.D in Materials Science from the University of Tokyo (1994) and held positions at the National Institute for Fusion Science (Toki) and the University of Kyoto, before joining the staff of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Materials Science and Technology Division in 2003. He has published over 160 scientific papers and has 20 patents (granted or pending), mostly related to processing of silicon carbide ceramic composites. His work has embraced a broad spectrum of activities ranging from understanding fundamental mechanisms of radiation effects in SiC to the development and manufacture of new materials engineered on the nano-scale to produce greatly improved performance.
